February 12, 2008

EXHIBIT A:

Jobs versus O’Malley, May 9th, 1967

[Scenes of an empty ring, crowds gathering]

—Hello there, folks. It’s Friday night, and you’re joining me live, ringside at the Bacchan Theatre. And also here is my new co-host, Gabriel Oaks. Welcome aboard, Gabe.
     —Good to be here, Jack.
—Excited for the big fight here tonight?
—I sure am, Jack. I sure am. These two guys . . .. I mean, wow. These are two really big guys we’ve got here for you tonight, folks. There are going to be some big punches thrown here, some real heavy-hitting.
—The ground is going to shake tonight, Gabe.
—That it is, Jack. I mean, look at Tom Jobs. The man is a Leviathan. Stands six foot ten, weighed in at well over three-hundred pounds. I would not like to be on the receiving end of one of his punches. Know what I mean?
—He killed a man in the ring last month, Gabe.
     — . . .what? He did what?
—Killed a man. I was there. Saw it with my own eyes. Went twelve rounds. Literally beat the man to death.
—I did not hear about that. What . . . I mean, what happened. Why . . . Is he still allowed to fight?
—Well he’s here tonight, isn’t he, Gabe?

[The tape jumps. Long shot of two men in the ring. They cannot be seen clearly.]

     — . . .a look at the size of him, Jack. I think Jobs may have found his match here tonight. Terry O’Malley is a Goliath of a man, a behemoth in the ring. He’s stomping around. Snorting. Just as big as Jobs. Jobs who is standing quite still, hair slicked back. When he moves it’s . . . it’s sinuous, almost. He moves very smoothly for a big guy. It’s going to be quite a fight here tonight, folks.
—It sure is, Gabe. Oh, it sure is.
—Yes . . . Yes, well the crowd sure thinks so. I’m sure you can hear this at home, folks. I’ve never seen a crowd so excited. Baying for blood.
—They sure are, Gabe. Oh, they sure are.

[The tape jumps again. Another long shot. The two figures are stumbling about the ring, tumbling into each other. The commentary is barely audible above the audience.]

     — . . .how they’re still standing. Eighteen rounds, folks. I’ve never seen anything like this. Titanic blows. Both men are bleeding heavily now. Honestly, I’m surprised they haven’t stopped the fight. What about you, Jack? Have you seen anything like this before, Jack?
—They won’t stop this fight, Gabe. They can’t.
—What was that, Jack? Wow, this crowd sure is wild. Could you repeat that for the folks at home, Jack?
     —[Unintelligible]
     —Oh . . . Oh . . . OK, Jack . . . OK . . .

[ The tape jumps. The quality degrades. The ring can be made out. A vast black mass throbs at its center.]

—…and someone really should stop this, folks. I really don’t feel comfortable-
     —Shut up, Gabe.
     —Pardon-
—Shut up, Gabe. This is it. Look at this. The two men come together one last time, one final time. It’s ferocious. It’s fists and teeth and feet. It’s all they have left. A rising of muscle, a tide of violence. God, you can feel it. I can feel it in my balls. Look at them. Oh, all you faithful ones, look at them.

      [Pause]

—They’ve stopped. They’ve . . . Jack, are they . . .? Both men fall! They’re both on the ground. A double KO! I’ve never seen anything like this. The crowd. They’re on their feet. They can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. Good Lord, the blood. An incredible fight. And . . . wait . . . What the hell? What is that man…? What’s the referee . . .? Jack, where are you going? Get down. Get off there. What the hell is going on? The crowd are . . . They’re coming down. They’re all coming down toward the ring. They’re all . . . Jack, what are you doing? What the hell are you doing? No. Oh, God, no. What is that in your mouth? Oh, God, no. Are you eating . . .? They’re all coming down here, all of them. Oh God, someone help me. Someone come here. Help me. Oh, God, they’re eating . . . They’re eating th—

[ Tape ends.]
